Salsa Dance for Techos de Amor (Roof of Love) Fundraiser
On January 7, 2020, Puerto Rico suffered a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. This event has caused significant losses, both human and physical. This seismic activity that started on December 28, 2019, continues with new developments and aftershocks daily. In the face of fear and uncertainty, a large number of refugees are moving to community camps every day. Entire communities are sleeping in their cars, outdoors, or improvised shelters. People are exposed daily to bad weather, insects, and danger. Children, the elderly, and entire families choose to sleep outside, in fear of a ceiling collapse.
The Coalition of club and non-profits organizations from San Jose, California, and Puerto Rico, has launched the Techo de Amor (Roof of Love) campaign. A collaborative agreement must be in place to help the victims and fulfill the purpose of our mission. We want to offer those refugees a temporary shelter in camping huts—our goal is to buy 1,000 tents.
We have already reached an agreement with International Recreational Products in Miami, FL, and they have agreed to supply the desired tents for $36,000.00; this amount includes delivery and transportation on the island. The tents they provide meet the specifications for all weather conditions. These tents are very sturdy, portable, and lightweight. Once the payment has been made, delivery will take approximately 72 hours. We also need to cover transportation and the supplies for the medical assistance (mini clinic), the nurses, and paramedics that will be providing free medical aid. There have been reports of a lot of skin problems due to insect bites.
FedEx will donate the shipping and will be delivering to Aguadilla, PR. Twenty-four hours after pickup, "Techos de Amor" will begin to distribute tents in Guanica, Peñuelas, and Guayanilla. We will go to community camps not sponsored by the government; The team will be composed of Nurses, Firefighters, Paramedics, and experts in emergency management. This mission will take about 15 days or less. Follow up missions will continue according tonecessities. The locations that we are supporting are very active seismic areas, and the environment can change at any given moment. This situation is very different from Hurricane María. Right now, near the epicenter, 1,500homes are uninhabitable, and 500 are entirely destroyed, and the earthquake caused three casualties. The initialbudget will be allocated to tents and medical supplies. The miscellaneous expense will cover food, water, and snacks for volunteers or any other emergency that might occur.
We are asking for your support; your donations will provide relief and give confidence to those who have lost
everything. Your support will help ease people's pain and suffering. People will have some privacy, a place to sleep,
also protection from the mosquitoes and the rain.
The people will be honored and grateful for all the love, support, and help we will provide.
